Etymology

Central German byform of Zotte (“clotted flock of hair”) with open-syllable lengthening before -t-. Originally in the vulgar expression Zot(t)en reißen (“to remove clotted hairs from the pubic or anal region”), then used figuratively for the use of foul language (15th century).
