Etymology

First attested as sudrekercha in 1094. Compound of zuid (“south-”), the toponym Schoorl and Old Dutch walt (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The settlement was initially called Sudrekercha, a compound of sūthar (“southern, south-”) and kirika (“church”). The element zuid was added to distinguish the settlement from Noord-Scharwoude.
