Etymology

From Latin Agnus Deī, a calque of Ancient Greek Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ (Amnòs toû Theoû, lamb of God). The name refers to Jesus' role as a sacrificial lamb that is (voluntarily) slaughtered on the Cross.
