Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *eśetis (whence also Latvian ecêšas, Old Prussian aketes, Proto-Slavic *esetь (“grain rack”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂oḱetis, a variant of *h₂oḱ-et-eh₂ (“harrow”), itself perhaps a derivative of *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”). Direct cognates include Ancient Greek ὀξίνα f (oxína, “ox-drawn implement with iron teeth”), Latin occa (“harrow”), Old English eġeþe (“id”), Cimbrian égata (“id”), Cornish oges (“id”), Welsh oged (“id”).[1]
