Uncertain. Possibly an aphetic variant of dardat, from dardar (“loiter”) or from Proto-Germanic *herdō (perhaps via Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌰 (hairda)) with the addition of the collective suffix -at.
