From Proto-Celtic *owi-garyos, from *owis (sheep) +‎ *gar- (to call) +‎ *-yos (agent noun suffix), literally sheep-caller. The evolution of the first vowel of this word is irregular; the expected outcome of this compound would be **uígire.
