Etymology
From Proto-Central Eastern Polynesian *awatea "midday", from Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *qao-(qa)tea (“late morning to early midday”), from *qaho (“day”) and *qaatea (“clear, unobstructed”). Cognate with Maori awatea (“broad daylight”) and Samoan aoatea (“midday”).
