From Middle Dutch bende, from Old French bende from Frankish *bindā, *bindu, from Proto-Germanic *bindō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (“to tie; bond, band”). Cognate with Old English binde (“band, wreath, ribbon”), Old High German binta (“band, bandage, string”), Middle Dutch bende (“band, buoy, fetter”).
