black dwarf (plural black dwarfs or black dwarves)
- (astronomy) A theoretically predicted stellar remnant consisting of a white dwarf that has cooled and faded for trillions of years and no longer emits visible light.
- Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see black, dwarf.
Usage notes
Although either plural form can be used for any sense, black dwarves is more common for the literal sense, especially to refer to mythological beings, while black dwarfs is much more common in astronomy.
