From Proto-Brythonic *baranāko, from Proto-Celtic *barinākos (“rocky ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷr̥H- (“mountain, hill”), from *gʷerH- (“to elevate”). Compare Breton brennig, Cornish brennik.
