brushtull

Albanian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈbɾuʃtuɫ/

Etymology 1

From Proto-Albanian *brustula, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrust- (compare Old Saxon brustian (to sprout), Russian брость (brostʹ, buds (of a shrub)), from the root *bʰrews- (to swell, grow).[1] Topalli has argued for a borrowing from Serbo-Croatian bljušt,[2] although this seems unlikely on phonetic grounds. Compare also Romanian brusture (burdock).
