Etymology

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (to loosen; to untie; to unfasten; etc., SV: giải).

Its velar initial and rime suggest it was borrowed from a post-Old Chinese but pre-Middle Chinese layer; meanwhile, hỏi-tone, instead of expected **sắc typical of early loans, hints that its ancestor retained the meanings of tone-B yet acquired the reading of tone-C (“to pawn, to mortgage; to introduce a scholar to the imperial palace; to send under escort; etc.”) (see thính, tỉnh, sảnh, etc. for analogies).
