From Proto-Indo-European *kelH-m- (“stump”), a depalatalization of *ḱélh₂-m(on)-; cognate with Lithuanian kélmas (“stub, shrub, beehive”), Proto-Germanic *helmô (“handle; helm, tiller”).[1]
