chùa chiền

Vietnamese

Etymology

Attested as chùa trièn in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum, so the etymological spelling would be *chùa triền. In Nôm texts, the second element was spelled with various characters (including (MC drjwen), (MC drjen), (MC drjen), all with retroflex initial), although the etymological source is most likely (triền).
