Etymology 1
Inherited from Latin cubīlia, plural of cubīle (“bed, place of rest”), when Spanish cubil (“lair”). Ultimately from Latin cubāre (“lie down”) and hence related to English decubitus (“reclining position in bed”), concubine, etc.
