    From Proto-Italic *kūlos, from Proto-Indo-European *kuH-l-, zero-grade form of *(s)kewH- (to cover) without s-mobile.

    Cognates include Old Irish cúl (bottom), Lithuanian kẽvalas (skin, cover). Related to cutis (hide).
