Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *-tac. Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 怛⿰亇, with the first phonetic element as (MC tat) (modern SV: đát). The second element is most likely an example of dấu cá (visually seen as ) to indicate that the word written with the sign is chữ Nôm instead.
