data broker
English
Noun
data broker (plural data brokers)
- An individual or company that specializes in collecting personal data, mostly from public records but sometimes sourced privately, and selling or licensing such information to third parties for a variety of uses, often including advertising or marketing.
- 2014 May 28, Adrienne LaFrance, “Why Can't Americans Find Out What Facebook Knows About Them?”, in The Atlantic[1]:
- In the United States, there’s not much we can do to find out which aspects of our personal lives are being bought and sold by data brokers. That’s not the case in much of the rest of the world, where there are vast data protections, entire agencies devoted to data privacy, and serious enforcement efforts.
