From del (“part”) + tage (“take”). Calque of German teilnehmen, itself probably a calque of Latin participō (“to partake of, participate in”); compare corresponding calques such as Low German deelnehmen, deilnähmen, Dutch deelnemen, English take part, Icelandic taka þátt, Swedish delta and Norwegian Bokmål delta.
