Vietnamese
Etymology
gờ (“gee”) + kép (“double”).
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [ɣəː˨˩ kɛp̚˧˦]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [ɣəː˦˩ kɛp̚˦˧˥]
- (Saigon) IPA(key): [ɣəː˨˩ kɛp̚˦˥]
Noun
gờ kép
- (informal) The name of the Latin-script digraph GH/gh
Usage notes
- Used to say "a 'hard' g that only occurs before e, ê, i". There's really no such thing as a "soft g". gi is a digraph per se rather than just a "soft g" occurring before an i. Both the digraphs gh and gi were merely borrowed from Italian orthography.
