Etymology

From ġealpettan +‎ -ung. The suffix -ettan sporadically caused i-mutation: the attested form gælpettunga is assumed to be a Mercian dialect form with i-mutation,[1] which would correspond to West Saxon *ġielpettunga. The normalized form *ġealpettung represents a West Saxon form without i-mutation, which would correspond to Mercian *galpettung (compare galpettan).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈjæ͜ɑl.pet.tunɡ/, [ˈjæ͜ɑɫ.pet.tuŋɡ]
