From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gāˀi-, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾eH- (“to sing, cry”). Cognate with Latvian dziedāt (“to sing”), Proto-Slavic *gajati (“to caw, croak”), Sanskrit गायति (gāyati, “sing”).[1]
