From Middle Welsh golchi, from Proto-Brythonic *gwölxid, from Proto-Celtic *wolkīti, from Proto-Indo-European *welg- (“wet, damp”). Cognate with Cornish golhi, Breton gwalc'hiñ, Irish folc (“to wash”), Scottish Gaelic failc (“to bathe”).
