Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حالا, from Arabic حَالًا (ḥālan), adverbial accusative of حَال (ḥāl). Doublet of hâlen and hâl. Compare Azerbaijani hələ (still, yet), Bashkir әле (əle, still, yet), Kazakh әлі (älı, still, yet), Kyrgyz али (ali, still, as yet; just now), and Uzbek hali (still, yet).
