Unknown. Liberman compares Proto-Slavic *čemerъ (“false hellebore”), also used to describe venom or poison caused by this plant, from Proto-Indo-European *kemer-. The closest Germanic cognate is German Low German Hemer, Hemern and German Hemere (“hellebore”).[1][2] More at hymlic.
