jood
Dutch
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /joːt/
Audio: (file) - Hyphenation: jood
- Rhymes: -oːt
Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch jōde, from Old Dutch judo, from Latin iūdaeus, from Ancient Greek Ἰουδαῖος (Ioudaîos).
The soccer sense ("supporter of AFC Ajax") refers to the fact that the club Ajax hails from Amsterdam, a city with a traditionally large Jewish community. While supporters from rivaling clubs often chant antisemitic slogans during matches against Ajax due to this association with Judaism, supporters of Ajax have taken to referring to themselves as joden (or even superjoden), transforming what is intended as a taunt into a geuzennaam.
Noun
jood m (plural joden, diminutive joodje n)
- Jew (adherent of Judaism)
- (Netherlands, soccer slang, potentially offensive) a supporter of AFC Ajax
- Synonym: Ajacied
- (slang, derogatory, offensive) a dishonest or sneaky person
- Die jood heeft me genaaid, 200 euro naar de klote, godverkanker.
- That kike screwed me over, 200 fucking euros down the toilet, God fucking dammit.
Usage notes
- The uppercase spelling Jood is generally prescribed to refer to Jews in an ethnic rather than a religious sense (but this is not consistently followed; see that entry for more information).
