Etymology
From Middle High German cuffer, from Old High German *kuffar, from Proto-West Germanic *kopr, borrowed from Latin cuprum, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek Κύπρος (Kúpros, “Cyprus”), for the large reserves on the island. Cognate with German Kupfer, English copper.
