Etymology

From kake (“cake”) +‎ skive (“slice”). Probably a result of semantic drift cake > bread. Compare kakuskive (“slice of bread”) in dialects of Dovre, Hedmark and Hamar. The word kake itself has no meaning as bread in Trøndersk dialect (at least today), but is still used in this way in Dovre (compare kakuskalk (“bread crust”) in Dovre instead of brødskalk) and in Numedal (e.g. kakubryne (“sandwich”)).
