Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *kr-haːk, from Proto-Austroasiatic *khaːkʔ (“to hawk up phlegm”), ultimately onomatopoeic. Cognate with Khmer ខាក (khaak) and Khasi kyrkhah (“phlegm”). Also compare Chinese 咳 (ké).
