From Proto-Austroasiatic *doːl ~ *duəl (“hill, mound”). Cognate with Vietnamese đồi, Muong Bi tồl, Khmer ទួល (tuəl), Old Mon dal (“hill”) (whence Mon ဒဵု (tɜ̀)), Western Katu dɔːl (“back of mountain”), Minriq tol (“mountain”)
