Etymology 1
From Old Norse ljótr, from Proto-Germanic *leutaz. Cognates include Faroese ljótur, Jamtish ljøt. Attested as giøt by Jacob Nicolai Wilse in 1780 in his dictionary of Spydeberg dialect (he used gi- for every word beginning with sound [j]).
