Etymology 1

From Middle Welsh llei (comparative of llaw (small)), from Proto-Brythonic *llaɣü (comparative of *llaɣw), from Proto-Celtic *lagyūs (comparative of *legus (small)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lengʷʰ- (lightweight). Cognate with Old Irish laigiu.
