From Proto-Oceanic *maqasin (“salt”) (compare with Samoan māsima and Fijian masima) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)qasin (compare with Malay masin (“salty”) and Tagalog asin (“salt”)).[1][2]
