Borrowed from Spanish mahón (“nankeen; jeans”), named after Mahón, capital city of Minorca, Balearic Islands, where in the 18th century English ships transshipped cargo destined for Spanish ports in the Levant. The city name is then from Latin Portus Magōnis, from Magō, from Punic 𐤌𐤂𐤍 (mgn).
