mbath

Albanian

Etymology

To be dissected as (ë)mb-ath, and not as (ë)m-bath, which is shown in the Arbëresh word xath "to take off (shoes)", as well as the more common form dath (to take off (shoes)). Thus, *ath should be seen as the base, and is from Proto-Albanian *atˢ́, with final devoicing from earlier *að/dᶻ́, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *a(u̯)ća/i- or *a(u̯)d/j́a/i-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁áu̯-dʰ(h₁)-e/o-. Mbath in whole may be reconstructed as *h₂n̥tbʰí-h₁áu̯dʰ(h₁)e/o-. The word was reanalyzed as (ë)m-bath, which then gave rise to zbath, dvath and xbath.[1] For similar development of a (ë)mb- formation, see mbërrij.
