Etymology
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مثلا (mesela), derived from Arabic مَثَلاً (maṯalan, “for example”), adverbial accusative of مَثَل (maṯal, “example”). The form in /aː/ represents the Arabic pausal pronunciation (as also in evvela or mutlaka). By surface analysis, mesel (“example”) + -a (adverbial suffix).
