From Proto-Finnic *meccoi. Cognates include Ingrian metso, Livvi mečoi, Veps mecoi, Votic mettso, Ludian metšoi, Karelian meččo and possibly also Estonian metsis. Superficially metsä + -o, but probably rather a folk-etymological adaptation of *mët'os.
