Etymology
Phonologically irregular descendant of Proto-Polynesian *maqoha, from Proto-Oceanic *ma-osak (“ready to be eaten”), from Proto-Austronesian *ma-qesak (“ripe, cooked, ready to eat”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qesak (“ripe, cooked, ready to eat”). Cognate with Maori maoa (“cooked”), Rarotongan maoa (“fully cooked”).
