muống

Vietnamese

Etymology

Probably from Proto-Vietic *ɓɔːŋʔ (water spinach (Ipomoea)) (> Muong Bi bỏng) (Ferlus, 2007).

Attested in Quốc âm thi tập (國音詩集; 15th cent.) as 𡗐, composed of (MC mjuwng|mjuwngH) + (MC gjoX) (modern SV: mộng cự). Based on this evidence, Trần Trọng Dương (2012, 2014), and previously Nhẫn Gaston (1967), reconstructed the etymon with initial cluster *k-m-.
