muống
Vietnamese
Etymology
Probably from Proto-Vietic *ɓɔːŋʔ (“water spinach (Ipomoea)”) (> Muong Bi bỏng) (Ferlus, 2007).
Attested in Quốc âm thi tập (國音詩集; 15th cent.) as 𡗐, composed of 夢 (MC mjuwng|mjuwngH) + 巨 (MC gjoX) (modern SV: mộng cự). Based on this evidence, Trần Trọng Dương (2012, 2014), and previously Nhẫn Gaston (1967), reconstructed the etymon with initial cluster *k-m-.
