Related to Old Norse þurft, which is from Proto-Germanic *þurftiz. Cognate of Danish nødtørft, German Notdurft, Dutch nooddruft, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌿𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (naudiþaurfts).
