Deverbal from Proto-Slavic *o(b)gyditi. Influenced by Czech or Old Ruthenian. Compare Belarusian агі́да (ahída), dialectal Slovak ohyda, Ukrainian оги́да (ohýda). Further akin to Czech hyzd, Goral gid, Old Polish gid, Silesian gizd. Doublet of ohyzda, a borrowing from Czech.
