From Proto-West Germanic *olbandu, from Proto-Germanic *ulbanduz (“camel”), from Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas, “elephant”). The sense developed in Germanic through confusion. Doublet of helfant (“elephant”), a later borrowing in the original meaning.
