Usage notes

Some dictionaries maintain a prescription whereby the -ous form of the adjective is reserved for the "arising from or caused by" sense (sense 1) and the -ic form is reserved for the "causing a tumor" sense (sense 2). Descriptively, both forms are used for both senses.
