Etymology

Of uncertain origin. First attested in the end of 16th century as Pijlszen (definite singular), corresponding to dialectal Swedish pylsa. Compare Danish pølse of uncertain origin (attested since 1383), whence Swedish pölse. Compare also Norwegian Nynorsk pølse f and dialectal Norwegian Nynorsk pylse (having or-ending in plural in some dialects).
