Etymology

From either Proto-Sino-Tibetan or Proto-Lolo-Burmese. Cognate with Burmese ဖန် (hpan, astringent), Hani pail (astringent) and possibly Proto-Kuki-Chin *phak (astringent) and Drung paʔ. Compare Lhao Vo pin, Zaiwa bvan and Longchuan Achang pʰan⁵⁵.
