piwter

Welsh

Alternative forms

  • piowter (obsolete)

Etymology

Inherited from Middle Welsh pewter, from Middle English peutre; the modern form with -iw- has been readjusted after modern English pewter (given that it has /ɪʊ̯/ in Welsh English).

The obsolete form piowter might reflect a dialectal Early Modern English pronunciation such as /ˈpjɔʊ̯tər/.

Noun

piwter m (plural piwterau)

  1. pewter
