Etymology

A syncope of earlier pretosemolo, with metathesis from petrosemolo, from a cross of Latin petroselīnum and sēmen (thus "stone seed") as in Sardinian perdusèmene.[1][2] The Latin word borrowed from Ancient Greek πετροσέλῑνον (petrosélīnon), from πέτρα (pétra, stone) + σέλῑνον (sélīnon, celery).
