Etymology

From Middle Welsh prydyð, from Proto-Celtic *kʷritiyos (shaper, former) (whence Primitive Irish ᚊᚏᚔᚈᚈᚔ (qritti)), from *kʷritus (form, shape), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- (to do, make). Compare also pryd (form, appearance) and Old Irish cruth (form, shape, appearance).
