From Middle Welsh prydyð, from Proto-Celtic *kʷritiyos (“shaper, former”) (whence Primitive Irish ᚊᚏᚔᚈᚈᚔ (qritti)), from *kʷritus (“form, shape”), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- (“to do, make”). Compare also pryd (“form, appearance”) and Old Irish cruth (“form, shape, appearance”).
