Borrowing from Ancient Greek πτερῠγοειδής (pterŭgoeidḗs, “like a wing”), from πτέρῠξ (ptérŭx, “a wing”) + -ο- (-o-) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-like, -oid”). Doublet of pterygoīdeus.
