Borrowing from Ancient Greek πτερῠγοειδής (pterŭgoeidḗs, like a wing), from πτέρῠξ (ptérŭx, a wing) +‎ -ο- (-o-) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -like, -oid). Doublet of pterygoīdeus.
