purchiacca
Neapolitan
Alternative forms
- pucchiacca
Etymology
A dubious theory has it descend from Ancient Greek terms πῦρ (pûr) and κοῖλος (koîlos), with an approximate meaning of “fiery hole”. Nevertheless, a more likely etymology lies in Latin portulāca (“purslane”), a plant that was commonly used to mitigate vaginal pain after childbirth.
